Every Monday in the season the bowls club runs its popular Umbrella game for players of all abilities. They come together under the same Umbrella and a little spice is added because at the end of the season each member’s best seven scores are totaled and the winner gets the Umbrella Trophy. This requires consistency in shot scoring and a bit of luck in drawing the right partners on the rink every week.
Christine Davenport won the trophy this year, pipping husband Dudley, repeating last year’s triumph and is to be congratulated on both counts. No one has managed to retain the trophy since 1987.
The club runs two types of competition. Seasonal ones like the Umbrella and the four Champion of Champion events which are played in knock-out rounds and others which are played to a finish on just one day usually on a round robin basis.
Examples of day events are the Nigel Prince Trophy for pairs won this year by Norman Bratley and Keith Pacey and the Patteson Trophy won by Betty Leishman and Bill Davison. Both are pick your own partner.
